In 1890, trolley service came to West Chester. There was a trolley station located on the west side of High Street between Market & Minor Streets. This location is a municipal garage today.

This trolley was referred to in town as the “Dinky”. The Dinky was a mahogany and yellow trolley car that went from Virginia Avenue at North High Street to Rosedale Avenue in the south end of town. The Dinky was in service from 1890 to 1928.

Other trolley lines in West Chester went south to Kennett Square and on to Avondale. This particular line was instrumental in the building of Lenape Park for its customers. A western trolley line went to Downingtown and on to Coatesville. Then there was the Philadelphia line that went from Gay Street to 69th Street. Except for the Philadelphia line that remained running until 1954, all the other trolley lines went out of business in 1929. This was the last of trolley history in West Chester.
